Does the Paleo Diet Work? An Objective Review

does-the-paleo-diet-work

Occasionally someone will ask
me, “Does the Paleo diet work?” And my answer is usually the same
answer I give to any question of this nature: It depends on the person and
the way the diet is implemented.  I have several clients whose current
approach to eating appears to come very close to what would be considered a
Paleo or Paleo-type diet. So, I decided to try the diet out for myself, for a
trial run, and share a review of my experience.

What Exactly Is the
Paleo diet?

I guess there are two answers to that question. There is the
concept of the diet, where you basically match your eating habits to that of
someone who would have lived in Paleolithic times. Then, there is the diet
itself from a nutrition science point of view.

Eat like a Paleolithic person? Like, chomp down on big wooly

Vegan Protein Sources To Eat By

vegan-protein-sources

Vegan diets are becoming more and more popular lately. People are learning, understanding, and choosing to
eat less animal based foods, both for the health of their bodies, and the
planet. But there are common questions and concerns that a vegan diet may not
provide enough complete protein. Those who work out regularly may be
concerned about getting enough vegan protein sources to keep up with the muscle building
and recovery that comes with rigorous exercise. And, many of us are just
stuck in the mindset that we must consume meat and dairy in order to get
enough protein. The fact is that animal products aren’t the only source of quality protein. Read More

Why Diets Don’t Work- 5 Possible Reasons

Are you contemplating a diet, or currently dieting? Or, have you tried several diets only to find yourself back to your old unhealthy or overweight self after a couple months? Do you ever start to wonder why diets don’t work? There is a statistic flying around that 95% of all diets fail. I honestly had to search, a lot, to try to find the origin of this statistic. I could only find one article, The 95% Myth, that referenced a 40 year old study of just 100 participants. What I did find, however, is an overwhelming consensus

Father’s Day is coming up! So I thought I’d write an article
on how to support men’s health with nutrition and lifestyle practices that
anyone can adopt. Although Dads are celebrated once a year on this special
day, in general, their health is not the focus or priority. Studies show that
women tend to pay more attention to preventative health, nutrition, and
wellness. And, if there are children involved, the children often take
priority over the grown-ups. That leaves the adult male of the family lagging
behind in the basic steps to maintaining good health.

The first step for any man, whether he is a father or not, is to
just simply be aware that he has unique nutritional needs. Men can
become vulnerable to all sorts of health issues, and can cut short their
access to their own awesome male vitality, if Read More

Winter Foods that Boost Your Immune System

winter-foods-that-boost-your-immune-system

This has been a rough winter for
wellness and immunity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has
been reporting
some troubling statistics
about this year’s flu season. And the
information doesn’t always provide a clear strategy for what you can do to
protect yourself. Even if you’ve survived this flu season so far without
getting sick, we are not out of the weeds yet. And taking steps to provide
your body with optimal nutrition can only help. Here are some commonly known
winter foods that boost your immune system. And they’re in season right now!
So head on out to the Farmers Market and take this list along with
you.

5
Winter Foods that Boost Your Immune
System

1) Dark Leafy Greens

Eating a variety of dark leafy greens is not only a good idea for their
nutrient density-per-calorie in general, but getting a good dose of greens
and spinach in particular will provide your body with a big dose of
antioxidants from vitamin C, and folate. Folate helps your body make new
cells and repair DNA. In Read More

Nutrition Trends to Watch For in 2018

My email inbox is constantly
exploding with nutrition information. Some of it is more focused on product
marketing, while other emails are from doctors, researchers, and experts
devoted to advancing the cause of clinical nutrition, holistic health, and
other preventative forms of wellness. There are usually some common
denominators in this information that allows us to connect the dots and those
connections usually show up as new emerging nutrition trends.

Here are some of the top nutrition trends I see taking front stage
this year:

Eating Out Healthy- 5 Things to Consider

eating-out-healthy-tips

As we grow closer to the
holidays, and the social schedule fills up to the max, we inevitably find
ourselves dining out a lot more. Sometimes it is socially, other times, it is
just what we choose to do in the pinch of the busy moment. As all this fun
and great food starts to build up momentum in your calendar, any commitments
or efforts to eating healthy, or even eating out healthy start to become less
of a priority. But you don’t have to let that happen unless you truly want
to.

Wondering how to keep your healthy commitments,  when
faced with an unfamiliar menu at a restaurant, is one of the top
considerations my nutrition coaching clients share when we are going
through their initial consultations. You’ll be happy to learn that it is
actually pretty easy to handle when you have a plan and a few tips. So, I
have prepared a small list of things to consider when you are

Gluten Free Pasta Alternatives to Try Today!

gluten-free-pasta

Guess what? Not all gluten free
pasta is created equal. And, just because something says, “gluten
free” does not mean it’s necessarily any good for you. Pasta can be made
from a variety of foods free of gluten: beans, grains, vegetables, and more,
and each one offers something unique in providing your DV of needed
nutrients. In fact, the most popular go-to gluten free pasta made of quinoa
and-or brown rice is just a fraction more nutritious than the traditional
pastas made with semolina or wheat flour.

What happens with most gluten free diets is that people run to the
first substitute they can find that looks and tastes as close to the real
gluten filled product as possible. Take gluten free bread for example. How
many gluten free breads are really that great tasting? Not many, from my
experience. But, when you forget about the old product altogether, and give
yourself a chance to explore an entirely new context of enjoying pasta and
other gluten free alternatives, that is when a whole new world of superior
nutrition and great flavor comes to life. So, here are some of my favorite
pastas Read More
